This weekend will be the fourth year for Filmscape Chicago, the Midwest’s largest education-focused film and television tradeshow. 

Bringing the best of the best of lighting, camera, audio, and grip manufacturers, along with Chicago-area production resources, for two days of completely free classes, networking, and technology.

This year Filmscape will be held at:

The class covers best practices for working with a Camera Rental House. Topics for discussion will be placing and revising a camera order, prep etiquette, and expectations for gear returns and wrap.

LOADING 35MM FILM

Presented by Kodak, Panavision Chicago, and Keslow Chicago

Join us for a 90 minute crash course in film loading. Get hands-on time with 35mm film and both Panavision and Arriflex magazines. There will be tents available to practice in the dark. While some time will be spent discussing the many responsibilities of the film loader and how to keep everything straight, much of the time will be open to practicing loading and asking questions of industry people who loaded film once upon a time.

INTRO TO FINISHING, DISTRESSING, AND AGING TECHNIQUES

Presented By Corrison Studios

Looking to add that extra bit of realism to your prop or armor and not sure where to start? We will go over techniques on how to prep and finish your prop and then ideology for application, basic acrylic and oil paint washes, highlighting and lowlighting techniques, air brushing, negative and positive damage and texturing, rusting and more! At the end of this, you will be armed to sufficiently muck up your clean work to better bring out its realism.

BUDGETING YOUR SHOW

Budgeting 101: Where to begin? What Assumptions are you making? For investors/ pitch deck or ready for production?

This course will outline basic steps for Film/ TV budgeting to ensure your project is properly funded through production. While this will be a general overview it is open to all levels of expertise. Q&A sessions will be utilized to explore topics based on attendee specific needs.

Gary Adcock and guest Todd Freese  will take us through the practical and pitfalls of your new life in Virtual Production, Pulling back the curtain on the challenges facing the virtual production revolution, and how to overcome them on set plus a breakdown of upcoming developments, and a  discussion  about where we are in the industry.

MINI-MASTERCLASS ON CINEMA OPTICS WITH JAY HOLBEN

Join Jay Holben, ASC associate member, chair of the ASC MITC Lens Committee, contributing technical editor for American Cinematographer magazine and co-author of The Cine Lens Manual as he takes you through the fundamental understanding of cinema optics. Learn the truth about lens behavior, dispelling rumors and common misunderstandings. Dive deep into how light behaves passing through various glass elements, the formation and correction of aberrations, understanding coatings, the differences between vintage and modern lenses and understanding how to evaluate and choose the character of a lens for your particular project.

VACUUM CAR RIGGING MASTER WORKSHOP

Presented by CL Hobbs, LLC & Black-Tek

Thomas Rhoim is the Owner of Movie Cars, one of Germany’s most popular pursuit car companies. They specialize in all aspects of Film Vehicles: Insert Cars, Low Loaders, Ukraine Arms and the unique Black-Tek Tower system.

Thomas will be teaching an advanced Vacuum Car Rigging Workshop detailing the specialized Black-Tek Air Rig system popularized by the British TV series “Top Gear”

ELECTRONIC BASICS FOR PROPS AND COSTUME

Presented by Corrison Studios

In this workshop, we go over the basics of electronics and components, from soldering, resistors, L.E.D’s and other light sources, switches, power sources and more advanced techniques like adding smoke effects, blinking and fading L.E.D’s, and some basic Arduino and light array work. We will then talk about ways you can implement everything into your project and get hands on with some kit assembly.

This information session will answer your questions on how to start and succeed in union camera departments on narrative film & television.  The panel of Local 600 members and staff will discuss paths into Camera, the process of joining the union, and positions within camera departments.  If you’re thinking of joining Local 600 but want to know more, or are about to join and have questions for working members, then this info session is for you!

Smash Studio’s Andy Jarosz will walk through how LED video panels are built and function, with a guide on  how different aspects of different manufacturers’ designs affect their performance on-camera, and avoid common pitfalls when choosing a video panel for Virtual Production.

BLACK-TEK TOWER SYSTEM MASTER WORKSHOP FOR HIGH SPEED CAR WORK

Presented by CL Hobbs, LLC and Black-Tek

Thomas Roim is the Owner of Movie Cars, one of Germany’s most popular pursuit car companies. They specialize in all aspects of Film Vehicles: Insert Cars, Low Loaders, Ukraine Arms and the unique Black-Tek Tower system. The Black-Tek Tower is used worldwide by Directors and Cinematographers to capture dynamic shots particularly in high speed cornering situations. In combination with the Ukraine Arm and Drones the Black-Tek Tower can quickly become an ‘indispensable’ item in the kit of any camera or grip team.

Thomas will guide a hands on demonstration of the Build process and use of the Tower in conjunction with a stabilized head.
