Officials with the City of Savannah and Chatham County have been on-site and continue to inspect the area. Further assessments will be made in the coming days. The affected area, as well as a safety buffer, have been cordoned off and appropriate measures have been taken to secure the area. We are grateful to the team at the City of Savannah for responding quickly over the holiday weekend. As of this morning, we have been informed that Chatham County will be managing the repairs as the site is located on the County’s right-of-way. Our team is in touch with all of the stakeholders and will continue to monitor the situation.”Chatham Area Transit’s ferry operations were disrupted over the weekend over reports of a sinkhole in the same area.Ferry operations have since resumed.

SAVANNAH, Ga. —

Part of the river walk on Hutchinson Island is closed to foot traffic as city and county crews assess damage for which the cause is still under investigation.

The City of Savannah as well as Chatham County both have workers on the plaza that connects the Convention Center and the Westin Hotel.

The damage is fairly extensive — a large, gaping hole separates the concrete dock of the of the Savannah Belles Ferry and the brick plaza.

Bricks from the walkway are uneven and out of order.

Catherine Glasby with the Chatham County Public Information Office told WJCL 22 News that the cause of the damage is still being determined but that it is probably due to the way that the landing was constructed, and not the 3.9 magnitude earthquake that struck early Saturday morning 65 miles away in Metter.

Glasby said that they have had issues with the landing in the past.

President and CEO Joseph Marinelli declined to speculate as to the cause of the damage by phone and put out the following statement Tuesday afternoon:

“Over the weekend we were made aware that problems have developed on the plaza area connecting the Westin Hotel and the Savannah Convention Center on Hutchinson Island. Officials with the City of Savannah and Chatham County have been on-site and continue to inspect the area. Further assessments will be made in the coming days. Chatham Area Transit’s ferry operations were disrupted over the weekend over reports of a sinkhole in the same area.
